Community Workers

Hello N.V. Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long MEA weekend and that you were able to spend some quality time with your children.

I spent Thursday attending the Midwest Conference for Listening and Spoken Language. I was able to listen and gain so much information from our keynote speaker Carol Flexor, PhD. She spoke about the Listening Brain and new brain research. The information regarding Auditory Neural Activity was fascinating! Early intervention for children with hearing loss allows the brain to make connections and is necessary for auditory stimulation and growth. Repetition and practice is key to stimulating the brain so the language skills develop, and children can then attain intelligible speech.

I am proud of our children here at Northern Voices as it is exciting to see these children grow and learn daily!

  • This week we move into learning about Community Workers.

  • Throughout the week we will examine all the different jobs that men and women do to be an integral and important contributor to our society.

  • Children are so proud to talk about their parents.

  • This is a good time to let your child know about the jobs you do when you go off to work.

  • Everyone is special whether they work out of the home or stay home. Each person can be responsible for helping out.

  • We will be taking a closer look at people we might have contact with within our communities.

  • We will be role playing so we may experience first hand the importance of each worker.

  • Some of the vocabulary words will include: tools, uniforms, office workers, grocery workers, Firefighters, Carpenters, Police, Doctors, Dentists, Teachers, Mail Carriers, Car Mechanics, Pharmicists, Cashiers, Audiologists.

For Show and Tell:

Please have your child bring in something that represents one of these workers. Please take time to talk with your child at home about why they are bringing in the show and tell item as this will prepare them with the conversation to share with the other students.
